Getting around
Zimbabwe is a big country. Here is how visitors travel between its main destinations.

Flying between the main destinations
Domestic flights are the quickest way to cover long distances. Fastjet Zimbabwe flies between Harare, Bulawayo and Victoria Falls, and international flights also arrive in Victoria Falls, so many visitors fly straight there. Schedules and routes change, so check with the airline when you plan. Smaller charter flights serve some lodges and parks, such as Hwange, Kariba and Mana Pools, and are usually arranged by the lodge or a tour operator.
Transfers and tours
Most lodges and tour operators offer airport transfers and can arrange road transfers between destinations, for example from Victoria Falls to Hwange. This is often the easiest option on a first visit, especially to remote parks.
Driving yourself
- Traffic drives on the left.
- Avoid driving outside towns after dark: roads may be poorly lit, with potholes, animals and vehicles without lights.
- Expect toll gates and police roadblocks. Stop when asked, stay polite and ask for a receipt for any fine.
- Fuel can be in short supply in some areas, so fill up whenever you can and carry cash, as cards may not be accepted.
- In national parks, keep to the speed limits and park rules, and stay in your vehicle unless you are at a marked spot.
- If the presidential motorcade approaches, pull off the road and stop.
- Check which driving licence or international permit you need, and carry copies of your passport and visa.
Getting around towns
Use taxis recommended by your hotel or lodge. Commuter minibuses (kombis) are cheap and widely used by locals, but travel advice suggests visitors avoid them where possible.
Crossing to Zambia and Botswana
Victoria Falls town sits on the border with Zambia, and the Kazungula border with Botswana is about an hour's drive away. Many visitors combine Victoria Falls with Chobe in Botswana or Livingstone in Zambia. See Entry and visas for the KAZA UniVisa.
